When I saw this clip of bizarre food in Puerto Rico I felt warm and comfortable. It brought so many good memories of a part of my life that these days I cherish the most.
I go down memory lane and I can picture those sunny, hot but breezy days in my little island. Specially when the whole family and friends use to get together and drive up to grandpa's farm to spend a day or the weekend on the big house. We played until we were so tired we sat down under the shadow of a tree and fall asleep, only to be suddenly waken up by the occasional rain shower, the sound of the cows mooing or the yelling of one of our mothers looking for us because it has been way too long they didn't hear from us or to help out with supper, my favorite part of the day. I was always ready to help out whether it was picking root veggies, fresh eggs or milk and even sometimes doing some prep and even stirring the pot.
Supper was a feast; often with 2 or 3 choices of meat or poultry, rice, beans, boiled root veggies and a fresh salad. While the main dishes simmer slowly on the fire, some light and quick appetizers were prepared and pass around. The aroma was unbelievable, and we all waited impatiently for everything to be ready so we could seat down all around the big porch and savor the big meal.
That was life !
